Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has thrown his support behind the state's ongoing crackdown on food adulteration and violations of food safety standards.
Fadnavis defended the enforcement drive led by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) chief Tukaram Mundhe, saying strict action is necessary when food quality and public health are at risk.
Fadnavis Supports Strict Action
Speaking about the FDA's recent enforcement campaign, Fadnavis said action against food adulteration was necessary because poor-quality or contaminated food can pose serious risks to people's health.
The chief minister indicated that the Maharashtra government would continue taking action against businesses found violating food safety requirements.
His comments come as the FDA's enforcement activities have attracted considerable attention across the state.
Restaurants and Hotels Under FDA Scanner
Over the past month, the Maharashtra FDA has reportedly carried out inspections and enforcement action against several restaurants and hotels.
The campaign has focused on compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations, with some establishments facing action including licence suspensions.
The regulator's approach has also generated controversy, with the Bombay High Court previously questioning aspects of the food safety body's enforcement policies.
Celebrity Endorsements Also Under Scrutiny
The FDA's activities have extended beyond restaurants and food businesses.
Notices were reportedly issued to Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff in connection with their endorsement of Vimal Elaichi advertisements.
The notices have drawn additional attention to the regulator's broader approach toward food-related advertising and compliance.
Support From Mumbai Civic Administration
The crackdown has also received support from BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, who praised the FDA's efforts to improve food safety awareness and encourage businesses to follow hygiene standards.
However, Bhide also highlighted the importance of making such initiatives sustainable through longer-term systemic improvements rather than relying only on enforcement drives.
What Happens Next?
With the chief minister now publicly backing the campaign, Maharashtra's food safety enforcement is expected to continue.
The key challenge will be balancing strict action against food adulteration with consistent, transparent enforcement procedures. For restaurants, food manufacturers and other businesses, compliance with food safety standards is likely to remain under close scrutiny.
