K Srikkanth Questions Gambhir as Devdutt Padikkal Strengthens Case for India’s No. 3 Spot

Devdutt Padikkal is quickly turning his opportunity in India’s Test team into a selection headache for the team management.

After producing a match-winning 167 in the first Test against Sri Lanka, the Karnataka batter followed it up with another century in the second Test in Colombo. His latest knock of 117 runs off 193 balls has strengthened his claim for a permanent place in India’s middle order.

Padikkal has been filling in at No. 3 in the absence of Sai Sudharsan, who is currently unavailable due to injury. His remarkable run of form has now sparked questions over whether India can afford to leave him out once Sudharsan returns.

Srikkanth Questions Gambhir’s Approach

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth has voiced his concerns over the situation, particularly regarding head coach Gautam Gambhir’s reported preference for backing Sudharsan as a long-term No. 3 option.

Srikkanth argued that Padikkal’s performances are making it increasingly difficult to overlook him, especially after scoring more than 200 runs across his first two Tests of the series.

While criticising Gambhir’s approach, Srikkanth also acknowledged his qualities as a former player and his understanding of the game. He suggested, however, that the India coach could be more communicative in his approach.

Padikkal Produces Another Impressive Century

Padikkal's latest hundred came during a strong opening day for India in the second Test.

The left-hander spent nearly five hours at the crease, facing 193 deliveries and striking 12 boundaries during his 117-run innings.

His innings was not without early danger. Padikkal received two significant reprieves after Sonal Dinusha at cover and Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva at slip were unable to hold onto difficult chances.

Once settled, however, Padikkal controlled the innings with impressive composure.

Key Partnerships Put India in Command

Padikkal played a central role in India's progress by building two important partnerships.

He added 120 runs for the third wicket with captain Shubman Gill, helping India establish a strong platform.

He then combined with Ravindra Jadeja for another 74-run partnership for the fourth wicket, further strengthening India's position.

Padikkal eventually fell after reaching his century, but his contribution helped India finish the opening day at 300/5.

Padikkal Creates Selection Dilemma for India

Padikkal's performances have changed the conversation around India's No. 3 position.

His 167 in the first Test was followed by another century in Colombo, giving him a remarkable start to the series. With Sudharsan still part of India's longer-term plans, the team management could now face a difficult selection decision once all players are available.

For now, Padikkal has made the strongest possible argument — by consistently scoring runs when given the opportunity.
