Telangana BJP Chief N Ramchander Rao Taken Into Preventive Custody Ahead of Nalgonda Visit

Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao was taken into preventive custody by police on Tuesday ahead of his proposed visit to Nalgonda, where he planned to meet BJP district president N Varshith Reddy following an alleged attack on Reddy’s residence.

Rao said he intended to visit Nalgonda to express solidarity with Varshith Reddy after Congress workers allegedly ransacked his house. In a post on X, the Telangana BJP chief accused the Congress government of detaining him to prevent the visit and alleged that the action reflected a disregard for democratic principles.

Speaking to reporters at Gandhi Nagar Police Station, where he was taken along with other party leaders, Rao also criticised the Congress government over its completion of 1,000 days in office.

He questioned the government’s record and said people across different sections of Telangana were facing difficulties. Rao demanded that the ruling party explain which of its major election promises and guarantees had been implemented.

Rao and the other detained BJP leaders were later released.

The political tensions followed a series of incidents involving BJP and Congress workers in Telangana. On August 31, BJP activists staged a protest outside the camp office of state Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy in Nalgonda.

Congress workers allegedly responded by attacking the residence of BJP district president Varshith Reddy.

The BJP has also condemned an incident in which Youth Congress activists allegedly threw black colour at the rear gate of the Telangana BJP office in Hyderabad. BJP workers reportedly responded by throwing eggs and tomatoes, burning an effigy and partially tearing a banner outside Venkat Reddy’s office.

Meanwhile, political tensions also surfaced in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district on Tuesday, where BJP and Congress workers held rival protests. Police used mild force to disperse members of both groups.

BJP workers allegedly damaged flower pots at the camp office of Bhuvanagiri Congress MLA K. Anil Kumar Reddy and poured black ink at the entrance. Police detained 14 BJP workers in connection with the incident.

Following the incident, Congress activists gathered outside the BJP office and allegedly attempted to throw stones. Police intervened and prevented the situation from escalating, according to an official, who said the situation was subsequently under control.

BJP leaders later submitted a memorandum to Telangana Director General of Police C.V. Anand, seeking a detailed investigation into alleged attacks on the BJP office in Hyderabad, the party’s Nalgonda district office and Varshith Reddy’s residence. They also raised allegations concerning the alleged disrespect shown to a portrait of Sant Ravidas Ji.

The latest clashes came after Youth Congress activists protested at the Telangana BJP office on August 31. The protest was reportedly linked to the BJP’s alleged ‘shuddhikaran ceremony’ at a venue in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani where AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge had addressed a rally.

The series of incidents has intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and Congress in Telangana, with both sides accusing the other of provoking violence and seeking action from the authorities.
