Trump Suggests Renaming Strait of Hormuz ‘Trump Strait’ Amid Growing US Tensions
US President Donald Trump has suggested giving the Strait of Hormuz a new name, proposing that the strategically important waterway be renamed “Trump Strait.”
Trump made the remark in a post on his Truth Social platform, linking the proposed name change to his administration’s claims regarding US control over the waterway.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote, adding that, like America itself, it would be “hotter” than ever before.
The comment comes amid escalating tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for energy shipments.
Trump has repeatedly raised the possibility of the United States asserting sovereignty over the waterway. In recent weeks, he has also shared a map depicting the Strait of Hormuz as what he described as a “new US territory.”
The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman and connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. Its strategic importance stems from the large volume of global oil and gas shipments that pass through the narrow waterway.
Trump’s latest proposal to rename the strait is likely to attract further attention as Washington’s confrontation with Iran continues to put the waterway at the centre of international security and energy concerns.
For now, the name Strait of Hormuz remains the established international designation for the waterway, while Trump’s “Trump Strait” suggestion remains a political proposal rather than an official geographical name change.
