IPL Impact Player Rule Under Review as BCCI Seeks Franchise Feedback

The Impact Player rule is once again under scrutiny as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seeks fresh feedback from all 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises ahead of the 2027 season.

According to a Cricbuzz report, franchises have been asked to submit their views by Monday, August 31, as part of a broader review of cricket-related operations. The BCCI is also seeking feedback on the playing conditions, umpiring, practice sessions and Player and Match Official Area (PMOA).

However, the Impact Player rule remains one of the most closely watched issues following the completion of IPL 2026.

BCCI Seeks Fresh Feedback From IPL Franchises

The latest consultation follows comments made earlier this year by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who indicated that the board would review the rule after the 2026 season.

The BCCI said the feedback exercise was agreed upon during the IPL 2026 captains' meeting and would cover several cricket operations matters.

The Impact Player rule has been a major topic of discussion in recent IPL seasons, with supporters arguing that it adds tactical depth while critics believe it has tilted the contest too heavily in favour of batters.

The 2026 season also saw a notable increase in high-scoring matches, further intensifying the debate over whether the rule has affected the balance between batting and bowling.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Among Critics

Several prominent Indian cricketers have previously questioned the impact of the rule on T20 cricket.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have expressed concerns about the reduced role of bowlers and whether the additional substitute player affects the traditional balance of the format.

The BCCI, however, has defended the rule. Saikia said in May that the tournament continued to produce a variety of results, including low-scoring games, and argued that fans were enjoying the competition.

IPL 2027 Decision Could Depend on Franchise Views

The current feedback process could provide the BCCI with a clearer understanding of how the franchises view the Impact Player rule after another complete season.

Teams have been asked to discuss the listed issues with their cricket operations departments and submit consolidated feedback by August 31.

The responses are expected to help the BCCI determine whether changes are necessary before IPL 2027. For now, the Impact Player rule remains in place, but the latest consultation could determine whether it continues in its current form next season.
