Mumbai to Get Two More Ring Roads as MMRDA Plans 307-km Network of New Loops

Mumbai’s metropolitan transport network could soon expand with two additional ring routes planned by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), taking the proposed number of ring roads in the region from seven to nine.

Together, the two planned routes will cover approximately 307 km. However, MMRDA is not planning to construct 307 km of entirely new roads. Instead, the proposed loops will integrate existing roads with infrastructure projects that are under construction or in the planning stage.

The aim is to create continuous road corridors connecting different parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.

Eighth Ring Road to Connect Navi Mumbai and Thane

The proposed eighth ring road will be approximately 197 km long.

The route is expected to connect Navi Mumbai with Thane while linking several existing and upcoming transport corridors.

Rather than functioning as a standalone road, the eighth ring will combine multiple stretches of existing infrastructure to create a continuous loop across the metropolitan region.

The project could improve connectivity between major urban centres and provide motorists with alternative routes around congested parts of Mumbai.

Ninth Ring Road to Create a Coastal-Eastern Loop

The ninth proposed ring road will cover around 110 km.

The route is planned to begin at Nariman Point in South Mumbai and travel north along the western coastline towards Borivali.

From Borivali, the proposed loop will turn towards Thane before returning to South Mumbai through eastern corridors.

The route is expected to bring together several major infrastructure projects, including sea links, coastal roads, tunnels and expressways.

Existing Infrastructure to Form the Loops

MMRDA's approach involves stitching together infrastructure already available or being developed rather than building two completely new road networks.

The proposed routes could therefore integrate a range of major transport projects across the metropolitan region.

By connecting these corridors into loops, authorities aim to provide more continuous travel options and reduce dependence on individual heavily congested routes.

Target Completion by 2029

Both proposed ring routes are being targeted for completion by 2029, subject to the progress of the various infrastructure projects that will form parts of the loops.

The expansion from seven to nine proposed rings represents a broader effort to improve road connectivity across the rapidly growing Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

If implemented as planned, the two loops could provide new connections between Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai while making greater use of the region's expanding network of expressways, coastal roads, tunnels and sea links.
