'Trapped Students Making Phone Calls': BJP MLA on Delhi Building Collapse in Satya Niketan

A six-storey building collapsed in Delhi's Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon, triggering a major rescue operation after several people were feared trapped beneath the rubble.

South-West Delhi BJP MLA Anil Sharma, who reached the site, said the building was being used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation for college students. He said some students had reportedly managed to make phone calls from beneath the debris, raising fears that more people could still be trapped.

The MLA said authorities had not yet established the exact number of people inside the building at the time of the collapse.

Students feared trapped under debris

Speaking from the accident site, Sharma described the incident as deeply tragic and said students from different parts of the country stay in PG accommodation in the area while attending college.

He said several students had already been rescued, but emergency teams were continuing their search for those still trapped.

According to Sharma, some people trapped beneath the collapsed structure were able to make phone calls, providing rescuers with potentially important information about their location.

He said the government's immediate priority was to locate and rescue everyone who could still be inside the building.

One dead, two critically injured

The building reportedly collapsed at around 1:34 pm near Delhi University's South Campus.

At least one person has died, while two others are in critical condition. Several more people are feared to remain trapped under the debris.

A large emergency response has been mobilised at the site, involving the Delhi Fire Services, police, medical personnel, disaster-response teams and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

At least 12 fire engines have been sent to the location. An excavator has also been deployed, while additional heavy machinery is being brought in to clear concrete slabs and metal girders.

Building identified as 'Hostel Daze'

Police identified the collapsed structure as 'Hostel Daze' and said that construction work had been taking place in the basement.

The ongoing construction activity is expected to be an important part of the authorities' investigation into what caused the six-storey structure to collapse.

Rescue personnel are working carefully through the rubble as teams attempt to locate anyone who may still be alive beneath the debris.

Delhi government monitoring rescue operation

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed concern over the incident and said she was closely monitoring the situation.

Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood also said the government was keeping a close watch on the rescue operation and had directed officials to take all necessary measures to protect those at the site.

The authorities have focused on clearing the debris and reaching potentially trapped students as quickly and safely as possible.
