Duleep Trophy Final: Ishan Kishan’s Century Overshadows Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Explosive 44 as East Zone Take Charge

Chennai: Ishan Kishan provided the defining innings of the opening day of the Duleep Trophy final, producing an unbeaten 111 as East Zone finished Sunday in a commanding position against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

The day had initially belonged to teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who entertained the crowd with an aggressive cameo at the top of the order. But once the youngster departed, Kishan took control of the contest and turned a promising start into a substantial East Zone total.

At stumps, East Zone had reached 385/4 in 79 overs, with Kishan still at the crease alongside Kumar Kushagra.

Sooryavanshi launches East Zone's innings

The spotlight was firmly on Sooryavanshi after East Zone captain Kishan chose to bat first.

The 15-year-old immediately showed his attacking intent, finding the boundary twice in the sixth over against MD Nidhees before turning his attention towards Mohammed Siraj.

Siraj was taken apart during his opening spell as Sooryavanshi struck a boundary and a six over long-on before adding another four from the final delivery of the over.

The assault helped East Zone reach 50 in only 7.5 overs and prompted South Zone captain Tilak Varma to bring on off-spinner Tripurana Vijay much earlier than might normally be expected in a five-day match.

South also adopted a notably defensive field for Sooryavanshi, placing five fielders outside the inner circle.

Siraj's first spell proved particularly expensive, with the India pacer conceding 41 runs from his five overs.

Easwaran joins the attack

Sooryavanshi was not the only East batter to make an impression during the opening exchanges.

Abhimanyu Easwaran played fluently at the other end, keeping pace with his young opening partner as East raced through the early overs. He reached his half-century from only 46 deliveries, while the team moved to 100 in 14.3 overs.

The opening partnership finally ended at exactly 100.

Chama Milind got the breakthrough by dismissing Sooryavanshi for 44 from 37 balls. The teenager attempted to pull a short delivery but failed to control the shot, with substitute Tanay Thyagarajan completing the catch at deep square leg.

Sooryavanshi's dismissal ended a brief but highly entertaining stay at the crease, but East Zone continued to score freely.

Kishan takes centre stage

With the early fireworks over, Kishan shifted the focus towards a more substantial innings.

Batting at No. 5, the left-hander made the most of favourable batting conditions and an increasingly tired South Zone attack. He reached his fifty from 71 deliveries before significantly increasing the tempo.

His second fifty came much faster, requiring just 51 balls.

Kishan eventually completed his century from 122 deliveries, reaching the milestone with a straight drive off experienced leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal.

The hundred was Kishan's 10th first-class century, and he remained unbeaten on 111 at the close of play. His innings included 14 fours and one six from 135 deliveries.

Kushagra provides strong support

Kishan found an ideal partner in Kumar Kushagra during the latter part of the innings.

Kushagra remained unbeaten on 63 from 75 balls, including four boundaries and five sixes. His aggressive approach ensured that South Zone could not easily contain the scoring rate even after removing the two openers.

The pair had added an unbeaten 144-run fifth-wicket partnership by the end of the day.

That stand transformed East Zone's position and left South Zone facing the prospect of a long day in the field when play resumes.

Easwaran misses out after promising start

Before Sooryavanshi's departure, Easwaran had looked equally comfortable against the South attack.

The experienced opener appeared on course for a major score after reaching 50 quickly, but his innings ended on 72 from 86 balls.

His dismissal, coming through a run-out, prevented East Zone from converting its rapid start into an even bigger opening partnership.

Despite losing both openers, East Zone's middle order ensured that the momentum never shifted decisively towards South Zone.

East Zone finish day one firmly ahead

By the end of the opening day's play, East Zone had accumulated 385 runs from 79 overs and lost only four wickets.

Sooryavanshi's aggressive 44 gave the innings an early burst, while Easwaran's 72 provided stability before Kishan assumed control with his unbeaten century.

Kishan's knock, supported by Kushagra's counter-attacking half-century, has put East Zone in an excellent position heading into the second day.

South Zone will now need early wickets when play resumes, particularly the dismissal of Kishan, if they are to prevent East Zone from building a first-innings total that could put the final beyond their reach.
