UK Condemns Iran After Missile Threat Near Diego Garcia Base, Vows Defensive Response

Yvette UK Home Secretary Cooper described Iran’s actions as “reckless threats” and reaffirmed that Britain would continue taking defensive measures to protect its interests and allies. However, she emphasized that the UK does not intend to escalate the situation into a broader regional conflict.

According to multiple reports, Iran allegedly launched two ballistic missiles aimed at Diego Garcia, a joint US-UK military facility located in the Chagos Islands. Neither missile reached its target—one reportedly malfunctioned mid-flight, while the other was intercepted by a US naval vessel.

The base at Diego Garcia holds major strategic importance due to its ability to support long-range military operations across the Middle East. It has been a critical asset in past operations and remains central to Western military presence in the region.

UK officials also raised concerns over Iran’s increasing threats to global shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most vital oil transit corridors. Britain has recently expanded its defensive cooperation with the United States to counter potential risks to maritime security.

Iran, meanwhile, has defended its actions, warning that foreign military involvement could further destabilize the region. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran would exercise its right to self-defense and cautioned that such developments could put British lives at risk.
